WeatherBug has been one of America's most trusted weather apps since its desktop launch in 2000, growing to over 20 million users across iOS and Android. Backed by the industry's most extensive weather observation networks and proprietary severe weather detection technology, WeatherBug delivers hyperlocal, real-time forecasts and alerts to help people make smarter decisions every day.

The Opportunity
WeatherBug had a monetization stack that worked until the ground shifted beneath it. For years, the weather and utility app had built its in-app ad infrastructure around their SDK vendor, customizing the open-source code extensively to give its engineering team direct control over ad decisioning. Alongside it ran their vendor’s Prebid Server, Amazon TAM, and Nimbus. It was a complex system, and it ran because WeatherBug's engineers made it possible.
When their Vendor was acquired and announced the SDK would be closed, WeatherBug faced a decision that went well beyond swapping out a header bidding wrapper. The entire ad serving foundation needed to move. The team chose to migrate to Google Ad Manager as the ad server and, as part of that, to find a managed Prebid partner for in-app header bidding rather than rebuilding the complexity they were walking away from.
The goal wasn't just continuity. It was to offload the ongoing weight of managing a sophisticated programmatic stack from an engineering team that had other priorities.
The Approach
WeatherBug evaluated a handful of Prebid managed service providers before selecting Aditude. Two factors drove the decision:
Methodology – Several vendors offered their own proprietary SDKs, which would have introduced a different kind of lock-in. Aditude's implementation uses the industry-standard Prebid Mobile SDK, the same open-source foundation available to any publisher, which meant WeatherBug retained the ability to pivot if the relationship didn't work out. For a team that had just spent years trapped by custom code they couldn't easily leave, that mattered.
Track record with app publishers – Managed Prebid services tend to originate in web and migrate to app as an afterthought. Aditude was already operating at full capacity with app publishers and could offer references.
“Aditude was already full speed ahead with app publishers and those publishers had good stories to tell. It made the decision to work with Aditude more appealing than others.”

The Solution
Prebid Server for App
WeatherBug launched Aditude’s Prebid Server for App on Android while simultaneously migrating its ad server to GAM, taking on both changes at once rather than sequencing them. With Aditude, WeatherBug was able to:
Preserve existing demand - Nimbus and Amazon TAM relationships carried over intact, with no loss of active demand partnerships during the transition.
Add net-new demand - Access to Google Open Bidding and AdX real-time demand came online for the first time, unavailable under the previous vendor stack.
Resolve post-launch latency - The team identified latency on certain ad units introduced by the new GAM setup and implemented pre-fetching to address it.
Align bid signals - Aditude worked with WeatherBug to match the bid signals Prebid Server was sending bidders to what their vendor had previously passed — a detailed technical exercise executed without friction.
Quick onboard bidders - Under their previous vendor, partners without prior certification faced a lengthy approval process. With Aditude, any bidder with a Prebid adapter can be connected.
Prebid Server for App on iOS is expected to launch by the end of 2026, bringing the full app footprint onto the same infrastructure.
Exec
WeatherBug uses Aditude’s Exec reporting platform for ongoing visibility into Android app performance.
Bidder-level reporting - Data is sliced by platform, partner, and date for granular performance reads without needing pre-built dashboards.
Ad hoc monitoring - The team pulls quick views on specific bidders and checks for unusual traffic patterns on demand.
The Results
WeatherBug’s migration was not a simple swap. The team changed its ad server, its header bidding infrastructure, and its demand stack simultaneously, which makes it difficult to attribute specific revenue outcomes to any single change in isolation.
What the data does show is that once full Android inventory came online in late February 2026, the scale of activity on Aditude’s Prebid Server grew dramatically: average daily ad request volume increased roughly 11x compared to the partial rollout period, and eCPM held steady through the transition before climbing further as optimizations took hold.
From March through June 2026, the first four full months of operation, programmatic revenue flowing within Prebid Server grew 35%, with eCPM climbing steadily as post-launch signal optimizations and expanded AdX demand took effect alongside Q2 advertiser spend.
Beyond the numbers, the operational gains are clear:
Engineering freed from SDK maintenance - The team no longer carries the burden of a decade-old, heavily customized SDK.
Bidder onboarding cut from weeks to days - New demand partners live significantly faster than under the previous vendor.
Rapid response to technical changes - When bid signal configuration needed to be updated, Aditude executed without escalation chains or extended timelines.
Flexibility through a longer-than-expected transition - When iOS planning was delayed, Aditude stayed adaptive throughout.
“The move to Aditude has been good for WeatherBug. It's the right thing for us as a business for long-term stability and support. With all the things we were tackling at once, the Aditude team made that element of it super smooth. It's super refreshing in the ad tech space to work with people who want to find solutions.”
— Catherine Beattie, Director, Programmatic, WeatherBug
Aditude's approach stood in contrast to WeatherBug's experience under a large enterprise vendor, where organizational scale made flexibility difficult by default. The difference, as Beattie noted, isn't just responsiveness, it's the mindset behind it.
With iOS migration expected before the end of year, WeatherBug and Aditude will have the full app footprint running on the same stack, and a clean baseline for the optimization work ahead.
